MEGAN Walters has taken a varied and exciting path since finishing her schooling at Kununurra District High School at the end of 2011, and now she's the latest Trainee to complete not one, but two traineeships at the Kununurra Community Resource Centre.
The Kununurra CRC has, since 2010, successfully mentored and completed 6 trainees, with another two just beginning in 2014.
The successful traineeship program was a part of the new look CRCs post 2009 state election, thanks largely to the Royalites for Regions program funding CRCs across the state to support and encourage regional people to take up this opportunity to upskill and build their capacity.
Before completing her entire schooling at KDHS, Megan decided that she wanted to visit the Amazon, so when Rotary Youth Exchange opened up that possibility, Megan jumped at the chance to spend a year in Brazil as a Rotary Youth Exchange student.
Prior to returning to normality, Megan was unsure what she would do to readjust to life in Australia after an amazing year abroad, she had always wanted to become a teacher and when the opportunity arose to take up a traineeship at the CRC she jumped at the opportunity.
"When I saw the Traineeship at the CRC advertised, I thought it would be a great way to re-adjust and to pick up some skills and qualifications so that when I head to Uni, I can be more employable," said Ms Walters, "I didn't realise just how diverse a range of skills I would pick up working at the CRC!"
"We have a great partnership with Kimberley Group Training and Kimberley Training Institute who have been critical in ensuring our trainees succeed over the last few years," added CRC Manager, Natika, "the Royalties for Regions funds have been very well spent on building the capacity of our community through this program."
"Megan has been an amazing Trainee, she has managed to handle pretty much any challenge we have had in her time here, she is a fabulous advertisement for all that is able to be achieved when you have an open mind, the desire to achieve and the drive to get up and do it all!"
Since joining the CRC team, Megan has become a very active Rotarian, and is even working towards establishing the town's first Rotaract Club - which operates similarly to Rotary, but is aimed at young people who want to improve the lives of people around them through service activities.
