Everybody who came to Light the Night, held at the Town oval, was enthusiastic to participate and show their support from purchasing lanterns, buying food and drink to participating in the door prizes. It was a great family environment and thankfully, the brewing storm passed around Kununurra leaving a humid, but pleasant afternoon to catch up with each other before speeches and, once dark, the lantern-lit walk around the oval. Before the walk, Frauke Bolten-Boshammer, Gay Collins and Sara Ware (read aloud on her behalf) shared their personal stories about battling cancer or losing somebody to blood cancer. The Kununurra CRC arranged for the Leukaemia Foundation’s General Manager, Andrew York, to speak via a pre-recorded video about how the Foundation helps individuals and families battling blood cancers. After the speeches those present walked around the oval with blue, gold and white lanterns shining bright.
Kununurra’s first Light the Night event raised just over $8,000 which was only made possible through the generous support of businesses and individuals of Kununurra who donated food, drinks, door prizes, advertising space and supported the logistics. The committee would like to thank Rotary Kununurra, Kununurra Picture Gardens, SWEK, Kimberley Hair and Beauty Retreat, Coles, IGA Kununurra, Gulliver’s Tavern, The Bangle Business, MooWoo, Kununurra Country Club Resort, Save the Children, Brumby’s, Aviair and all of the individuals who made this special night possible!
